Some football Players who turned managers for the same club

Some players after retirement becomes managers or work as a management staff in the same club which they played in. This can be seen in most proffessional leagues, it could be because of the players relationship with the club or his level of play making skills on the pitch.

This incident is often seen in situations where the player has developed a long term relationship with the club, but sometimes it does not depend on any of the above factors, it's purely business.

These are some players who managed thesame club they played in:

  • Kenny Dalgish:
  • Kenny Dalgish was born on 4th of March,1951. He played as a forward during his career. Kenny being a Scottish player, played for Celtic in the late 60's and 70's before moving on to join the English side team "Liverpool". He became one of the most successful strikers in both Liverpool and Celtic.

    Kenny was contracted by Liverpool as their manager in 1985 to replace Fagan,his success story continued as he led Liverpool to winning several trophies and titles before before his resignation in 1991. He futher coached clubs like Blackburn Rovers,Newcastle and Celtic before returning back to Liverpool.

    He led Blackburn Rovers to winning their first and only premier league title. Both Liverpool and Celtic has inducted him into their hall of fame.

  • Johan Cruyff:
  • The Dutch three times Ballon d'or winner is widely regarded as one of the all time best players and managers. He played with the Dutch club "Ajax" before joining Barcelona in spain. Both clubs held him in high regard due to the record he created with the both clubs.In Ajax, he claimed eight Eredivisie titles after eleven successful seasons with the club,he also won one intercontenental cup with them before his move to Barcelona where he secured the Ballon d'or on his first season

    Hendrick Johannes Cruyff returned to Netherlands for his management proffession after retirement from proffessional football in 1984. He became Ajax manager in 1985,taking them through three consecutive seasons before joining Barcelona in 1988. Cruyff management proffession recorded a huge success.

  • Carlo Ancelotti:
  • The Italian manager recorded huge success in his proffession as a player. He played as a Midfielder for Italian clubs including Roma and AC Milan. As a player he recorded four copa italia and a serie A title amongst others.

    Don carlo as he is called remains the manager with the highest UEFA Champions league titles, he is a four times Champions league winner, which he won with AC Milan and Real Madrid respectively. He is also one of the most decorated manager in the history of football.

    the clubs he has managed includes: Parma, Reggiana,Juventus, AC Milan,Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and he is currently managing Real Madrid FC.

  • Zinedine Zidane:
  • Zidane was born on 23 june 1972, he was known for his success in his career as a footballer. Zidane played as Midfielder for Real Madrid FC where he was popular called Zizou and widely regarded as one of the all time best Midfielders in the history of football.

    He started his career in Bordeaux in France before moving to Italy to join Juventus from where he joined Real Madrid for over €77 million fee, A transfer record that remained unbroken for about 8 years. One of his legacies was his left foot volley winning in the 2002 Champions league final. As a player, FIFA accoladed Zidane the world player of the year for three different times.

    After Zidane retired from proffessional football, he returned to Spain for his managerial proffession. He managed Real Madrid for a number of years and depicted what is seen as a successful management career.

  • Ole solskjær:
  • Ole Gunner Solskjær is a Norwegian football manager. Ole was a former Manchester united playmaker who was mostly known for his last minute winning goals, he featured in the champions league final against Bayern Munich Where he came off bench to score the winninggoal for United in the last minutes of the game, securing their treble in 1999.

    After been destabilized by injuries, he retired from proffessional football and became the Manchester United reserve manager. He later came on to replace José Mourinho in 2019 and got dismissed in 2021 after loosing the Europa league final to Sevilla in penalties.

  • Xavier Hernandez:
  • Xavi was born 23 January, 1980. He played in the Spain side for Barcelona. He was well known for his playmaking alongside his team mates Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho Gaucho amongst others. He debuted for Barcelona in 1998 and won a total of eight laliga titles and four champions league titles. He left Barcelona in 2015 to Al sadd where he recorded about four trophies before his retirement in 2019. Immediately after retirement, he took over Al sadd management for two years before leaving for Barcelona. He has been managing Barcelona since 2021 till date and has won a laliga title and a super copa de Espana for Barcelona in his first full season as a manager.

  • Josep Guardiola:
  • Pep Guardiola was born 18th January, 1971 in spain. He is currently managing the English Premier league club "Manchester City". As a player he spent most of his career in spain as a defensive Midfielder for FC Barcelona. After retiring in Dorados as a proffessional footballer in 2006, he was appointed by FC Barcelona in 2007 to manage the Barcelona B where he won a Tercera Division title and was promoted to coach FC Barcelona with whom he won his and their first continental treble in his first season.

    He left Barcelona in 2012 with 14 titles and joined FC Bayern Munich in 2013 with whom he won three different bundesliga titles in three different seasons with them before he left for the English side in 2016. He stabilized the team with so many titles including helping them secure a treble after Manchester United's in 1999
